SAFARI ITINERARY

On our safaris we offer a style of travel which is extremely comfortable, yet allows our guests the opportunity to get off the beaten track and away from the ‘main routes’.  This is a relaxed alternative to a lodge safari and designed for those who prefer to sleep under canvas in comfort and get away from the crowds.
Elephants on Safari

Although the safari vehicles are roomy and open on all sides to allow the feel of Africa to permeate, it is fully under canvas cover overhead to keep you out of the glaring sun. The seats are high and comfortable and ideal for game-viewing and photography. Inside your safari vehicle you will find a selection of reference books on Botswana’s parks, its history, flora and fauna as well as a fridge with cold drinks.

Your host and guide is fully licenced and highly experienced. He is accompanied by a full support crew, consisting of a mechanic and cook,  who will go along in a back-up vehicle to take care of all the camp chores and ensure that you are well looked after. The support vehicle goes ahead of the group and sets up the camp to await your leisurely arrival. Your guide and his assistants are experienced professionals who will prioritise your comfort and safety as well as ensuring optimal game-viewing opportunities throughout your safari with us.

You will be accommodated in 3m x 3m dome tents with screened doors and windows to keep your sleeping quarters free of any insects.  Tents have en-suite toilets and bucket showers.

Our friendly cook will provide scrumptious 3-course meals, which will either be served in the mess tent or under the stars.  Meals usually consist of a continental breakfast before the early morning game drive, a cooked brunch on your return to camp for siesta or a light picnic lunch on days that we move camp from one area to another, afternoon tea and biscuits, snacks with your sundowners and a hearty three-course dinner.

ITINERARY

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK - MOBILE CAMPING SAFARI    F/B

We meet in Kasane on your arrival and transfer by road to our private campsite in Chobe National Park. The drive to the Chobe River takes about one hour.

TERRAIN: Along the Chobe riverfront the terrain is that of a typical riverine ecosystem. Away from the river we have mixed miombo and broadleaved woodland that harbours rich avifauna.

GAME: Northern Chobe is famous for its elephant & buffalo herds, puku, kudu, Chobe bushbuck and hippo. One could also hope to see: lion, leopard, wild dog, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, impala, baboon, vervet monkeys, warthog, sable, roan, lechwe, banded mongoose, crocodile, leguan.

ACTIVITIES: Game drives; birding; boat trip on the Chobe River.

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK - SAVUTI - CAMPING SAFARI- F/B

While the camp staff break camp and load the supply vehicle, we head off on a game drive. When we meet up with the supply vehicle again we drive to Savuti in convoy. The drive lasts approx five hours with a picnic lunch en route. At Savuti the staff will set up camp on the banks of the now dry Savuti Channel while we explore our new environment.

TERRAIN: Savuti Marsh is typical open grassland surrounded by Acacia bush and stony outcrops reminiscent of Serengeti.

GAME: Savuti is famous for its lions and hyenas, lone elephant bulls, zebra and wildebeest migrations. Other game one can hope to see include: giraffe, tsessebe, warthog, black-backed jackal, leopard, cheetah, bat-eared fox, impala, wild dog, kudu, baboon, steenbok, dwarf, slender and banded mongoose.

ACTIVITIES: Game drives; birding, bushman paintings, elephants at waterhole.

MOREMI NATIONAL PARK & OKAVANGO DELTA  - CAMPING – F/B

We transfer by road to our private campsite in Moremi (approx 5 hours’ drive with a picnic lunch en route). The road leads via the Khwai River, which offers good opportunities for close-up game and raptor photography.

We will spend the next two nights here. On day two we will explore the waterways by boat from Mboma Island.

TERRAIN: Moremi being an extension of the Okavango, offers a typical wetland system with grassy plains and pans surrounded by well-developed mopane forests and riverine woodland. While out on the mokoros the terrain will alter to typical Okavango Delta terrain with its grassy flood plains dotted with large termite mounds, small islands fringed with palms and larger islands with riparian forests of sausage and ebony trees. Water lilies adorn the bracken-lined watercourses and streams.

WILDLIFE: Elephant, lechwe, waterbuck, impala, hippo, warthog, squirrels, baboon, vervet monkeys and banded mongoose are common. So are crocodiles and leguan. One can also hope to see buffalo, giraffe, bushbuck, lion, wild dog, leopard, cheetah, black-backed and side-striped jackal, zebra, wildebeest, tsessebe, bush babies, fruit bats, sable, kudu, roan, steenbok, duiiker, honey badger. The birdlife includes water birds as well as dry land birds.

"Traveler's Guide to Botswana by Peter Comley and Salome Meyer. Struik, 1994. Reviewer David Steele (Getaway Nov. 1994) says that for the first-time visitor this beautifully illustrated work is practically essential reading. The book is laid out in four parts: An introduction to Botswana, Getting around Botswana, Exploring Botswana and a Visitor's Digest. According to Steele the meat of this work is in the Exploring Botswana section which features the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Park, the Kalahari, and Eastern Botswana and the Tuli Block. The reviewer found the information to be accurate, "...which is not at all surprising since (authors) Comley and Meyer live in Botswana, guiding and conducting photographic safaris in all of this country's major tourist areas."
